Colbert: Trump Jury Selection Woes | Presidential Hot Dog Eating Contest | Drunk Vultures Rescued

Politics • Views: 13,372

The judge in Trump’s hush money trial is finding it hard to keep personal information about jurors from leaking out, a new poll shows President Biden trailing his rival by double digits in a hot dog eating contest, and workers at a Connecticut bird sanctuary rescued two vultures who got intoxicated after dumpster diving.

A man just set himself on fire outside the Trump courthouse, apparently 50 feet from an MSNBC reporter who reported it live.

#breaking: Full jury has just been selected in #TrumpTrial, 12 and all six alternates after several downplayed social media posts. Inner City Press live tweeted it - omitting places of employment, etc- stories on https://patreon.com/MatthewRussellLee and https://matthewrussellleeicp.substack.com

Oh, and in that stunt appearance at a Harlem bodega? Guess how the drive up/down to that bodega went?

It went exactly as well as you’d think:

If it’s the case that this was a Trump supporter, I can’t imagine the depths of depression and self-abnegation that would lead anyone to make a fatal pointless sacrifice in service of what is likely the least deserving person on earth.

We have entirely fake news outlets that report on Trump’s narcissistic inner-world as if it represents reality. They’ll have driven a lot of idiots off the deep end.

23
lawhawk  Apr 19, 2024 • 11:00:11am

Mental illness knows no political affiliation. Anyone can have issues, and the fact that everyone knew cameras would be there means that it’s a great spot to attract attention for any kind of cause - whether it’s to protest the trial, the ongoing war in Gaza, or anything else that comes to mind.

Dr Lizardo  Apr 19, 2024 • 11:00:40am

re: #18 jaunte

Exactly. A high-profile event like Trump’s trial is naturally going to draw an army of media and it’s a perfect opportunity for someone to make some kind of political or social statement. In this case, by immolating himself. But we don’t know his political persuasion or what motivated him to do that.

Jay C  Apr 19, 2024 • 11:00:52am

re: #18 jaunte

We don’t actually know what the motivation was, though.

One of MSNBC’s “contributors” (ex-ATF agent) was opining that it was probably *just* a suicide attempt, and the location was likely chosen (for whatever, and as-yet undetermined reason) for its publicity value/presence of cameras; though as the clip in no. 15 illustrates, it’s hard, in 2024, to find anyplace where somebody won’t be able to video it - for whatever “it” it is….

It wasn’t that long ago that someone immolated themselves to protest the war in Gaza. I guess we’ll eventually find out what cause this person was protesting. He is almost certainly going to die though.

People have to get over themselves if they believe they’ll be widespread violence if Trump is held in contempt resulting in incarceration for the pendency of trial. Trump did nothing for #January6th defendants even though he had two weeks to pardon them all. Everyone knows he only cares for himself. He’s also a coward.

Local win for water and air and health quality.
Key words: “CHEMICLY RECYCLES”.
WTF that?
A company from Texas, and that in itself is an alarm, wanted to put a plastics recycling plant in a township not far from me, which would use my drinking water to wash and draw chemicals out of plastics through high heat and then ship the product out by rail.
Would have had a hundred trucks a day, used a ton of water every day, and derived chemicals such as benzene, toluene and xylene in liquid form and the whole thing stunk to high heaven.
They jerked around, mumbled and refused to act in a timely manner, to the point the permits were revoked.
Couldn’t even come up with a storm water plan. By a major river, that provides drinking water for hundreds of thousands.
They announced the were taking their magnificently rotten plant somewhere else.
And the stooges here are gargling about Biden and liberals and Democrats and on and on.
They hid behind “proprietary” and “trade secrets” BS. Thankfully the DEP stood up along with the sane citizens and jammed these jackals.
Of course the coverage around here is very sparse, and all we hear is how much money and jobs are lost and the same old shit.
Find a small town.
Buy a few people.
Present a lie as truth.
Then screw them people into the ground.
One DEP statement for length.
Good good good

My God….you’ve discovered Trump’s secret strategy. He’s gonna get the court cleared for a biohazard threat.

All he’s gotta do is binge on some Big Macs for breakfast. He’d clear the courtroom for days.

You’d think that with all the drugs he’s on, someone would at least slip some Gas-X in with them….

The whole “Trump farting” thing is comedy gold, but just bear in mind that this is based on sources that are unsubstantiated to us. Essentially, it’s an arbitrary third party telling us, “A source I trust told me this.” Not that I don’t think it’s possible, or even likely; it sounds exactly like what would happen when a 77-year-old man on a strict diet of garbage food falls asleep. Just bear in mind, we don’t even necessarily have reason to trust the primary source, let alone the hearsay source.

It’s just gossip, of course, but it’s still humorous and not outside the realm of possibility, especially given Trump’s taste for junk food.

But maybe, when he has his autobiography written, he can call it “The Shart of the Deal”.

We have entirely fake news outlets that report on Trump’s narcissistic inner-world as if it represents reality. They’ll have driven a lot of idiots off the deep end.

i mean, who else would it be? a supporter of law and order lighting themselves on fire? Hardly. It’s one of trump’s island warriors. 40 years after surrender, they’re still on some philipine island, 2 miles square, ready to immolate themselves on behalf of the emperor.

edited because I actually hadn’t considered somebody lighting themselves up because of mental illness, beyond being a trump supporter, so good point.

Florida Man, of course: (via NYT):

A high-ranking Police Department official identified the man as Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla. The official requested anonymity because the man had not been publicly identified. Mr. Azzarello had appeared outside the courthouse on Thursday with a sign displaying the address of a website where the same pamphlets were uploaded. The top post of the website says, “I have set myself on fire outside the Trump Trial.”

The guy who set himself on fire is now at the Cornell burn unit (which is one of the best in the nation). He published a manifesto online (because of course he did). I wont link.

Lindsay Beyerstein
@beyerstein

The overarching theme in the manifesto is a conspiracy theory that that the US government has been taken over by a Ponzi scheme to hide illicit crypto profits. Shades of Sovereign Citizen, but none of the classic SovCit tics.

Seems that conspiracy theories (and their themes) have splintered into so many different variations that it’s hard to classify this one.

We have a variant of the SovCit thing here in Czech Republic. They insist that Czechoslovakia is still a thing, that they can write special letters to the courts to “reclaim their Czechoslovak identity” and believe they don’t need license plates, driver’s licenses, etc., and that any fines/penalties stemming from their crimes are “illegitimate”.

This ideology has definitely borrowed from the American Sovereign Citizen movement.

Yeah, but I’m still gonna run with it.

Oh, if YT is to be believed, it’s spread far and wide. It’s actually gotten pretty spicy in Australia, where cops have standing orders to immediately arrest any SovCit for refusal to comply after one of the nutters shot and killed two cops during a traffic stop last year.

Interesting — someone else on the site pointed out that this wasn’t for the actual package but for some rule, and that minority parties traditionally vote No on the rule issue, so we’ll have to see how this eventually ends up.

Things escalated wildly in 1988 when former CIA Director George H.W. Bush got the White House, but this plan had been in action long prior:

Why is Stanley Kubrick’s comedy about mutually assured destruction called Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb? Because he was a cocky secret fascist who was getting us to stop worrying and love the bomb. Why did he make A Clockwork Orange? So we’d rejoice at ultra-violence designed to desensitize us to the horrors of the world.

Why were the Manson Family murders crawling with cover-ups and intelligence agents? Because our government wanted to make us fear for our lives and believe that hippies are deranged psychopaths.

Why did Walt Disney produce a fraudulent documentary that told us Lemmings follow each other off cliffs? So we would believe it.

Why did The Beatles tell us to fear the taxman, to scoff at revolution, chase nonsense conspiracy theories, and that happiness is a warm gun? So we would believe it.

Why did Easy Rider tell us that the hippie movement was dead? So we would believe it.

Why did Chinatown end with defeatism in the face of massive corruption? So we would believe it.

Why did George Orwell tell us of a hellish future of totalitarian control that we are powerless to stop? So we would believe it.

Why did Wall Street tell us “greed is good”? So we would believe it.

Why did Do The Right Thing tell us we’re all racially tribalized? So we would believe it.

Why did Simpsons creator Matt Groening make a comic strip called Life in Hell? So we would believe it.

And on, and on, and on, and on. When it comes to any popular media, if you ask yourself the question, “Why would secret doomsday cult kleptocrats want the public to consume this?”, you will find your answers.

Bennett Braun, psychiatrist who inflamed a ‘satanic panic,’ dies at 83

Bennett Braun, a psychiatrist who inflamed the 1980s “satanic panic” with his controversial treatment of multiple personality disorder, including in patients who alleged that he misused drugs and hypnosis while spawning false memories of devil worship, human sacrifice and child sex abuse, died March 20. He was 83 and lived in Butte, Mont.

His family announced the death in an obituary published by a funeral home in North Miami Beach, Fla. The obituary did not share details, but one of his former wives, Jane Braun, told the New York Times last week that he died of complications from a fall while on vacation in Lauderhill, Fla. She did not return messages seeking comment.

A charismatic psychiatrist who was often cited by the press, Dr. Braun rose to prominence while treating multiple personality disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder. The condition, in which patients are found to have two or more distinct identities, was considered extremely rare before diagnoses mushroomed in the early 1980s, amid a wave of growing clinical interest that Dr. Braun helped stimulate.
He co-founded a professional organization, the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation; trained thousands of practitioners at annual conferences; and launched a first-of-its-kind hospital unit at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, now known as Rush University Medical Center.

The unit treated “the worst of the worst,” Dr. Braun said, taking in multiple personality disorder patients referred by doctors from across the country. Virtually all of the patients had been sexually abused as children, according to Dr. Braun, who aimed to treat the condition by excavating repressed memories of childhood trauma, at times with help from hypnosis and medications.

While Dr. Braun had several high-profile allies, many experts considered his therapeutic ideas dangerous and unscientific.

“The recovered-memory epidemic is the psychological quackery of the 20th century,” sociologist Richard Ofshe told the Chicago Tribune in 1994. Richard J. McNally, a Harvard psychology professor, described recovered-memory therapy as “the worst catastrophe to befall the mental health field since the lobotomy era.”

I’ve heard of this before. The theory goes that because the Simpsons accurately predicted so many things (including Trumps eventual Presidency), that it is actually a subversive tool used by the deep state/NSA/illuminati/Bilderberg group etc. to condition us to what’s coming down the line to better keep us under control.

Nevermind that you didn’t have to be fucking Nostradamus to speculate Trump might run for the Presidency or that a show that has been running for over 30 years just might make a few accurate predictions about the future or that the Simpsons has made plenty of predictions that have NOT come to pass.

Israel is increasingly worried by the prospect of the International Criminal Court in The Hague issuing arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli political and military leaders for alleged breaches of international law in Gaza, Israeli television reported Thursday.

According to Channel 12 news, three ministers and several government legal experts held an “emergency discussion” at the Prime Minister’s Office on Tuesday about how to fend off the potential warrants.

The meeting was convened after Jerusalem received messages indicating that such warrants could be issued in the near future, the report said, without citing any sources.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz’s office confirmed to The Times of Israel that the meeting took place and said there were also discussions about the possibility that warrants could be issued against IDF officers.

Gay furry hackers leak data of transphobic pastor & far-right news network

The group claims to have targeted numerous anti-LGBTQ+ political entities over the last year.

A self-described hacker group of gay furries called SiegedSec claims to have leaked data from the far-right media outlet Real America’s Voice and publicly released the cell phone number of a transphobic pastor.

The hack of Real America’s Voice allegedly included the names and phone numbers of over 1,200 users of the outlet’s phone app as well as information about the network’s top shows, including ones hosted by anti-LGBTQ+ Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and other far-right figures.

Real America’s Voice has broadcasted numerous segments accusing the LGBTQ+ community of “targeting” and “grooming” children. The outlet has also platformed the views of anti-LGBTQ+ religious leader Bryan Fischer.

Earlier this year, SiegedSec claimed to have hacked the River Valley Church of Burnsville, Minnesota — and to have spent $6,200 in church funds to purchase 100 inflatable sea lions — after its lead pastor, Rob Ketterling, allegedly made transphobic remarks. In the past, Ketterling said the legalization of gay marriage would lead to the legalization of pedophilia, polygamy, and bestiality.

The group also claimed to have doxxed politicians who supported North Carolina’s new age verification law, a law that categorizes LGBTQ+ content as explicit adult material.

No pour, straight from the can as I like as I hate to do dishes.
Not bad overall.

A device that tells me that I’ve been exposed for five minutes when covid is present 77%-83% of the time is interesting, but needs to get better.

It would be interesting to know what their test setup is, such as the size of the room. In a restaurant setting, you probably can’t faster than five minutes on average just due to dispersal patterns and airflow.

Ugh, I feel really bad for this guy, regardless of how off-the-rails he is.

I’ve mentioned this before, but there use to be a woman who would regularly roller skate on the plaza in front of the Philly Art Museum while waving a giant flag. It was some kind of protest for peace. I used to end my Fairmount Park bike rides there and and just hang out.

Eventually I stopped seeing her. Found out later she committed suicide by setting herself on fire. Really sad that whatever she was going through, she felt that was the only answer.

A few weeks ago, the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Chris Quinn, became an instant hero to the legion of news consumers who are fed up with the media’s refusal to call Donald Trump what he is.

In his weekly “letter from the editor,” under the headline “Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts,” Quinn wrote:

The north star here is truth. We tell the truth, even when it offends some of the people who pay us for information.
The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency. He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse.

As for those who equate Trump and Joe Biden, that’s false equivalency. Biden has done nothing remotely close to the egregious, anti-American acts of Trump…

… There’s a lot of anger with the national media, the New York Times and the Washington Post in particular. People feel that they have allowed the Fox News kind of media to set the agenda..,

If Donald J. Trump takes the stand at his criminal trial in Manhattan, prosecutors want to cross-examine him about recent lawsuits he’s lost, attacks he’s made on women and a judge’s opinion that his sworn statements in a civil case rang “hollow and untrue.”

The proceeding, known as a Sandoval hearing, was a high-stakes affair for all the parties: the prosecutors, the defense team, Mr. Trump and Justice Merchan himself. Whatever the judge decides will inform whether the former president decides to testify and, if he does, what prosecutors can ask him.

Though Mr. Trump has said he would testify in his own defense, there have been plenty of signs that he is not fully committed to. This week, his lawyers asked prospective jurors to assure them that they wouldn’t hold a failure to testify against Mr. Trump.
